Let's Talk About Accent Walls

When it comes to changing the look of a room, nothing beats a good accent wall! Whether it's a difference in your color scheme, or a bold wall from a different color palette altogether, that wall is going to drastically change the look of the entire room. Pair that accent wall with the decision to paint your ceiling a color other than white, and you can do things like shorten the appearance room, make it look taller, or enlarge the whole room!

If you look at the examples in the picture above, you can see how painting the ceiling and/or accent wall changes the way that the room looks, regardless of the colors chosen.

In large rooms, it is easier to play around with darker, more dramatic accent walls and ceilings than it is with small areas. Small rooms require lighter, brighter colors to help the room not look smaller than it already is. If you have a small room with a window and you're wanting an accent wall, paint the accent wall on the surface that gets the most direct sunlight. The surrounding light walls will complement the darker wall that is receiving help from the sun to keep it looking bright. I almost always advise my clients to paint the ceiling white, or another color that is very light, to help keep the small room bright, and make the room appear taller. A dark color on the ceiling makes it look like it's closer to the ground because your eyes are instantly drawn to it.

Larger rooms will allow you to play with more bold, dark or exciting colors on your accent wall and/or your ceiling. If you painted the entire room a light color, the room is going to appear larger, and vice versa with painting it all completely dark colors. If you paint the walls white, and the ceiling a dark gray, you're going to make the room look shorter by "bringing the ceiling down".

Study the above diagram and toy with some ideas in your head. Make sure to keep the color of your flooring or carpeting in mind when choosing the colors for your wall and/or ceiling. You want the room to be brought together nicely by complimenting the colors instead of having your colors clash. You can also head over to the Sherwin Williams app (ColorSnap) and take a picture of your room to play with potential colors before you make the decision to purchase the paint.
