Pristine Interiors is not sponsored or endorsed by the Master Painters Institute (MPI), nor the Painting Contractors Association PCA). Our company provides services based on the industry standards provided by both the MPI and the PCA. In our "File Share" page on our website, we list all of the industry standards set by the PCA.
Pristine Interiors is proud to follow the standards that are set to assist clients and contractors in the painting industry. As a painting contractor, we understand that our clients are making a huge commitment to improve their home or commercial space. Not only does such a commitment increase their property value, but it also increases the appearance of their home or commercial space. We believe that our clients should always experience a sense of pride, serenity and happiness when admiring the appearance of their home. A freshly renovated office building or commercial space will also have a positive impact on how their customers will view their company. Over-all, the decision to hire a painting contractor to renovate your home or commercial space may be a daunting idea, but the right contractor will confidently make this decision more peaceful for you. Read below for more information on how to find the perfect painting contractor to help you, and to learn more about our company.
1. MAKE SURE THE CONTRACTOR IS LICENSED/REGISTERED AND INSURED
If you were to search for painters near you to come give you an estimate for painting your home or commercial building, you will find a plethora of individuals and companies in the search results. The very first thing that you should seek out is a properly licensed and insured painting company or individual. Each state has their own requirements as to how a painting company is to be legally structured, but the majority require that a company be insured and licensed and/or registered. If the contractor is structured and operating legally, they will be more than happy to present to you their documentations proving this to be true. This helps home/business owners weed out the professionals from the non-professionals.
2. BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE HOME IMPROVEMENT CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT
In our state of Pennsylvania, the Attorney General's office has a lot of information that protects consumers from fraudulent contractors. You can visit their website and view the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act (HICPA) here:
The HICPA allows consumers to understand what their rights are and how they are protected. As a consumer, you have the right to report fraudulent contractors to the Attorney General's office. Also, if a contractor causes damages to your home and doesn't rectify the damages promptly, you can file a complaint through the Attorney General and their office will assist you. You can also find a copy of the HICPA in PDF form under our website's "File Share" page.
3. ENSURE THAT THE CONTRACTOR IS QUALIFIED AND FAMILIAR WITH THE PAINTING INDUSTRY STANDARDS
Great painters are proud of their work and will be more than happy to show you examples of their past projects. Ask to view some pictures of homes and/or commercial buildings that they've worked on if they're not already posted on their website or social media. Ask the prospective contractor if they are familiar with the painting industry standards, and more importantly, do they follow those standards on every job that they are hired to complete. The PCA Industry Standards are a great resource because they clearly assign and describe the different responsibilities of both the contractor and the client. The MPI is an extremely important resource that outlines which paint products are considered to be high-quality. Here at Pristine Interiors, we utilize the MPI list of approved products when it comes to our paint warranty that we offer to our clients.
4. MAKE SURE THAT THE CONTRACTOR CLEARLY UNDERSTANDS WHAT YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND DESIRES ARE FOR YOUR HOME/COMMERCIAL BUILDING
The contractor should take time to sit down with you to learn what your vision is. As the client, it should be your choice as to which color and sheen you want to have applied in your building. A good contractor will help you understand the difference between sheens like flat/matte, eggshell, satin, gloss, semi-gloss, high-gloss, etc. The contractor should be able to advise you which sheens go best in large, open rooms, and which sheens go best in small rooms, but ultimately the choice is yours as to which colors and sheens you want. The contractor should have a product selection form, or something similar, that they use to list the colors/sheens for each room, the brand of paint that is to be used, the color of trim and ceilings that you want, etc. This form should be kept with your service contract that you enter into with the contractor. A service contract specifically outlines what the scope of work will be, the time that it will take to perform the work, the cost and installment breakdowns, etc. Any time that there are changes that are to be made midway through the project, a change order should be utilized to reflect the changes, cost changes and changes to time needed to perform the job.
The bottom line is that you should feel comfortable with the contractor that you choose and at peace with the results of their work provided to you. If you are getting an estimate from a contractor and you do not feel comfortable with them, please go with your gut and keep researching other options. The painting industry is extremely competitive and there are a lot of fine painters out there that you can choose from. If the contractor that you chose does not provide quality craftmanship, or worse, damages your property, please do not hesitate to address this with them and request them to correct/repair their work. If they do not, you should file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office.
